Panoramic Journeys strategy to achieve Climate Positivity

"The Climate Emergency requires that we all step up to the challenge of reducing our carbon footprints and increasing the carbon that we sequester. Panoramic Journeys has a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). We are on a mission to scale up climate action more than anyone would ever consider a small company could do. Net Zero doesn’t seem ambitious enough, so once we are carbon negative – we aim to achieve Climate Positivity and to be directly and indirectly responsible for sequestering 1million tonnes of CO2. All of our guests will be involved in this mission."

"One of the ways in which we plan to get started with this mission is to collaborate with others who are on similar paths. We are proud to be joining a collective of travel companies, organisations and industry professionals who believe tourism should declare a climate emergency. We are also a part of this Climate Friendly Travel Registry. We acknowledge the science stating we have one decade to address the climate crisis. We accept we have a responsibility to tell the truth, act now, and work together to help turn it around."

Panoramic Journeys commits to:

  1. 1. Develop a ‘Climate Emergency Plan’
  2. 2. Share commitment and progress publicly
  3. 3. Cut carbon emissions
  4. 4. Work collaboratively
  5. 5. Advocate for scale

First All-Electric Cruise in UNESCO Nærøyfjord

Norway Leads An Electric Ferry Revolution

The world of large commercial boat electrification is being led by Norway electric ferries, which were first introduced to the country in 2014 when one of the country’s major ferry companies, Norled, announced the world’s first fully electric battery powered car ferry. Now electric ferries are becoming the latest must-have for one of the world’s most maritime-travel intense nations.

If you’ve ever seen a map of Norway, you’ll know that ferries are a big deal. It’s coastline has thousands of fjord inlets, and if you take into account all of them, it has 25,148 km of coastline – the 8th longest in the world. Just behind Australia (25,760) and well ahead of The U.S. (19,924) and China (14,500).

Named ‘Ampere’ after the unit of electric current, it went into service in June of 2015 and in its first two years sailed a distance equivalent to 4 times around the Equator, racking it up 6 km at a time by shuttling back and forth between two little ports called Lavik and Oppedal.

The boat stops for only 10 minutes at each end, and using a charger from Corvus Energy it gets an electric top up in those 10 minutes and a full re-charge overnight. It makes 34 crossings a day. With no fossil fuel expenses. No wonder Norled’s competitors want one.

Creating a Sustainable Future for the South Island, New Zealand

Ground Power Units

In 2016, Christchurch Airport implemented four Ground Power Units (GPUs) to some of its aircraft stands. As their name suggests, GPUs power aircraft while they’re on the ground at the terminal. This saves them having to burn fuel to run their systems. Over the next couple of years, they will be rolling them out to all of their jet aircraft stands. Because their GPUs use mostly renewable electricity to power the aircraft, they dramatically cut carbon emissions. Did you know? Every day when the Emirates A380 flies into Christchurch it plugs into a GPU. This saves around 1,000kg of fuel and 3,150kg of carbon emissions on each turnaround.

Residential Wind Turbine From India Costs as Much as an iPhone

Residential Wind Turbine From India Costs as Much as an iPhone

Arun and Anoop George designed a home wind turbine just around the size of a ceiling fan. According to The Times of India, the turbine can generate around one to three kilowatt hours of power daily, which they say is enough to power a house.

Ending energy poverty is one of the brothers’ main goals. They say on their website that around one billion people worldwide are underserved when it comes to power. Speaking in a video, Arun said: “Whatever power they produce, for the rest of the lifetime of the wind turbine, which is around 20 years, will be free electricity.”

Last year Avant Garde Innovations was the sole Indian clean energy company invited to the 7th Clean Energy Ministerial in Silicon Valley, and were honored as one of the Top 100 Global Startups at the NEWENERGY Global Startup Fest in Kazakhstan.

Now it’s almost time to get the wind turbine to the people. The brothers aim to launch their product in the second quarter of this year. You can find out more on their website.

The partnership between EXO Foundation who support Sustainable Development projects through responsible tourism in South East Asia and SUNx the Strong Universal Network, a legacy program for Maurice Strong responding to eXistential Climate Change.

It focusses on a shared commitment to develop the Maurice Strong Legacy Scholarship Program, under the SUNx “Plan for Our Kids” with EXO Foundation as the first regional sponsor.

Speaking from the COP 24, the UNFCCC Climate Change conference Professor Geoffrey Lipman, co-founder of SUNx said:

“We are delighted to announce our partnership with EXO Foundation as our first regional sponsor of our “ Plan for our Kids” and its Maurice Strong Legacy Scholarship Program. Together we have identified an opportunity to help strengthen education on Climate Resilience for Travel & Tourism in South-East Asia. Through our partnership EXO Foundation is supporting the lifetime learning of 21 graduates committed to Sustainable Tourism Development, with a focus on Climate Friendly Travel.

Our strategy is to create a cadre of 100,000 next generation of “Strong Climate Champions” by 2030, to help to drive the behavioural change and influence the fundamental government and industry actions needed to tackle Climate Change.

Strong Climate Champions will be graduates, who engage in the movement for Climate Friendly Travel, for transformation to the New Climate Economy. They will help to build the thinking; drive the behaviour, identify innovations and influence the fundamental government and industry actions needed.”

Lipman added that “The awardees, based on 1000-word essays on practical aspects of Climate Friendly Travel, will be linked with EXO Foundation through a certificate of excellence and lifetime access to the SUNx learning platform. This includes curated information on Climate Resilience, and a Climate Friendly Travel Course, supporting transformation of the sector to the New Climate Economy.”

Strong Universal Network Expands in China & One Belt One Road

&

In a landmark agreement, in the side-lines of the Club of Rome’s 50th Anniversary, Geoffrey Lipman, Co-founder of the Strong Universal Network (SUNx) and Jinfeng Zhou Secretary General of The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation [CBCGDF] agreed to expand the network established as a legacy to their friend and mentor Maurice Strong. SUNx and CBCGDF will collaborate on the development of a Climate Resilience network and capacity building in China, One Belt One Road States and associated African countries. The main components of the partnership are:

• Establishment of a Beijing SUNx Centre
• Development of the SUNx Network in China, One Belt One Road, and Africa
• Hosting Strong Climate Action Days from a Beijing base
• Developing the Maurice Strong Legacy Scholarship Program in China and beyond

The parties agreed to immediately focus on promoting Climate Friendly Travel and specifically with reference to Parks, Protected Areas and Cultural Heritage locations.

Geoffrey Lipman said “This is a massive breakthrough in a program that was inspired by Maurice Strong, one of the fathers of Sustainable Development and a visionary who saw the travel and tourism sector as vital to global development but in need of an accelerated transformation to the New Climate Economy. It also reflects his view that the next generation will be the climate champions of our world and that China will play a leading role. We are delighted to partner with CBCGDF an organization with a proud record for sustainability and conservation leadership. We agree that Climate Change is the existential reality on the global agenda and that strengthened networks in the spirit of SDG 17 are a key to our future”

Jinfeng Zhou said “I am particularly proud that we are making the agreement during the Club of Rome’s 50th Anniversary. As a newly elected member of the Club’s Executive Council, I believe it is precisely the kind of system change we stand for. It was why our friend Maurice Strong, whose legendary commitment to sustainable development of the planet and its people, is also reflected in the Club’s planetary boundaries vision. These are principles that we espouse at CBCGDF of action-oriented persuasion with a strong stakeholder engagement. Protected areas and species are a vital part of our bio-system and we need to step up our defences. The agreement comes at the time of publication of a new book Remembering Maurice Strong that shows so clearly where we have been and where we must urgently go.”

Zhou added “ We hope the SUNx Centres will also be places to showcase the renewed vision of the Club of Rome for accelerated change to a New Climate Economy”

Message To The World Health Tourism Congress: “It’s Almost Too Late”

In a strong keynote address to Tourism Experts, Doctors and Students gathered on the Portuguese Island of Madeira, Professor Geoffrey Lipman Co-Founder of SUNx – the Strong Universal Network said that the industry is running out of time to craft a meaningful response to the existential challenge of Climate Change.

He said that “Health Tourism - nature and medically linked - may well be in a sweet-spot of tourism growth, at more than 10% a year... but without a climate resilience strategy it will be equally vulnerable to the ravages of extreme weather and the consequences in terms of floods, fires, droughts and climate refugees”.

Lipman pointed to the heat patterns in the Northern hemisphere, the droughts in Australia, the typhoons in Japan and Philippines– as well as last year’s devastating Caribbean Hurricanes and this years’ US floods and forest fires.

He noted that “in the past decade more than 20 million climate refugees had already emerged – this is the tip of a humanly tragic and politically disruptive iceberg”. It will only worsen as we head towards 3o – which is where we will be in 2050 if we don’t make radical behavioural changes. As a leading sector Tourism must be in the forefront of those changes.

Lipman profiled the SUNx network to galvanise tourism destinations and to link the enormous body of research being done at Universities around the world, as well as the data and analytics from committed organizations inside and outside the Travel and Tourism sector.

SUNx has developed a framework for Climate Resilience and Innovation Centres in every country by 2030 – supporting Paris Climate Accord targets and linked to SDG 13. They will be pop up SUN Arks, cloud connected and filled with young bright climate champions, talking to each other about “Smart Impact-Travel” solutions. He defined these as “Travel & Tourism planning that’s measured to manage: green to grow: 2050 proof to innovate. Not so much detailed, definition-based programs but more a direction for change that every travel product needs to reflect, and every travel company or community needs to embrace.”

He also outlined SUNx lifetime learning approach with a Dodo cartoon series for kids, online University courses, a universal portal, focusing the most useful climate data analytics, and Strong Legacy Scholarships for graduates. The first of these will launch in 2019 in collaboration with t-Forum and the IRiSS the Italian Services Research Centre. This is complemented by an annual Climate SmART Award for Museums, as the ultimate learning centres.

Finally, he discussed the partnership project with TraNeXus, designed to bring Blockchain solutions to provide carbon accounts for travellers, which he believes will be needed as the Paris Climate Accords bite in the next decade and we will all have to deliver low carbon lifestyles.

SUNx will reach out to Communities and Corporations to help develop its Climate Resilience and Innovation System and build open links with likeminded Travel & Tourism organizations.

Quoting Maurice Strong he said “the planet will survive as it has done for billions of years. It’s the people we have to worry about” He concluded with the Club of Rome’s call for action “Come On - It’s almost too late. .... but we can fix the problem if we act together, now.
