SUNx Malta & World Tourism Network to put Dodo4Kids in IIPT Peace Parks

Speaking at the WTN “Rebuilding Travel” Event at ITB Berlin, Professor Geoffrey Lipman President of SUNx Malta, announced a new initiative with IIPT (International Institute for Peace & Tourism) and WTN (World Tourism Network).

The two organisations will make Dodo4Kids available electronically in the 450 IIPT Peace Parks around the world. Dodo4Kids is SUNx Malta’s flagship program to teach Climate Friendly Travel to early learners, in books cartoons and games with a reincarnated Dodo bird visiting tourism icons to warn about the Climate: Sustainability and Nature threats they face.

Lipman said: “We are delighted to help strengthen the impact of Peace Parks by focussing more attention on future generations - as well as showing the real threats to their wellbeing as travellers, in the years ahead. And it’s terrific to have the World Tourism Network on board to spread this initiative further.”

Ajay Prakash, President of IIPT said: “This collaboration will showcase the meaningfulness of our Peace Parks in these serious times for global peace and provide real content for our young visitors and their family members.”

Juergen Steinmetz Chairman of WTN called it “An important message, that we in WTN are proud to be helping deliver across our global network.”

SUNx and World Academy of Sustainable Development Limited Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance Climate Friendly Travel Across China and the Belt & Road Region

The SUNx Institute (SUNx Malta) and the World Academy of Sustainable Development Limited (WAOSD) today announced a long-term strategic partnership under the UN Sustainable Development Goal-17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The collaboration brings together SUNx’s globally recognised Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) framework with WAOSD’s scientific leadership and extensive networks across China and Belt & Road countries to accelerate climate-positive transformation in the Travel & Tourism sector.

Both organisations share a common conviction: Climate Change is an existential threat. Guided by the CFT Framework which is based on the Paris 1.5°C target, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and the Convention on Biological Diversity, the partnership aims to fast-track resilience and sustainable transformation across destinations and businesses.

Under the agreement, SUNx and WAOSD will jointly advance four core deliverables designed to strengthen climate action throughout the tourism ecosystem:

  1. Promote Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) Across China & Belt & Road Countries
The partners will launch coordinated outreach, training, and knowledge-exchange activities to introduce SUNx CFT system - Education-to-Action - to government bodies, Tourism authorities, industry associations, and academic institutions across the region.
  2.

  3. Encourage Hotels & Tourism Enterprises to Join the CFT Registry
WAOSD will support SUNx in driving hotel and tourism-sector participation in the global CFT Registry, a transparency and reporting mechanism helping businesses track and demonstrate progress toward climate-aligned operations. The registry will serve as an important catalyst for industry accountability and accelerated climate action.
  4.

  5. Support Tourism Destinations and Registered Hotels with Developing CFT Climate Action Plans
The partnership will help participating Tourism destinations and companies move from awareness to action by developing Paris 1.5, SDG & Nature+ve Climate Action Plans. SUNx’ CFT methodology will be paired with WAOSD’s scientific expertise to ensure that businesses have practical, achievable pathways to cut emissions, build resilience, and align with international climate frameworks.
  6.

  7. Promote “Dodo4Kids” Climate & Biodiversity Education
Recognising the importance of Youth “Education2Action” the organisations will collaborate to localise and promote the SUNx Dodo4Kids programme - a creative climate-education initiative designed to instil environmental awareness and positive action in the next generation.
  8.

Geoffrey Lipman, SUNx President said:

“We are delighted to consolidate our partnership with our old friend and colleague Jinfeng Zhou and WAOSD to help bring Climate Friendly Travel and our Education2Action program to China and Belt & Road countries. We have been collaborating - originally with the late Maurice Strong, father of the UN Climate, Sustainability and Nature Framework -  for more than a quarter of a Century and share a positive world view in which the immense socioeconomic strength of China and its Belt and Road strategy is a key driver for Climate Friendly Travel in a fragmented world challenged by the existential Climate Crisis.”

Dr. Jinfeng Zhou, President of WAOSD, added:

“Tourism sits at the intersection of biodiversity, climate, and human well-being. Through this collaboration, we will help ensure that China and Belt & Road countries can adopt world-class climate standards while fostering sustainable economic growth and protecting the planet for future generations. This reflects the vision of Maurice Strong, the architect of the UN Climate and Sustainability framework, who was our inspiration.”

Dodo4Kids: A Message of Hope for COP 30

Dodo4Kids: Vision for a Climate Friendly Travel Future

As the annual Climate COP convenes in #Belem and UNTO engages with its Tourism component, we want to offer a small contribution from SUNx Malta from our ‘Education 2 Action” program’ It’s prompted by the Travel Foundation’s call for “Big Ideas”. And rolled out around the world with our SDG-17 Partner the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA). We call it ‘Dodo4Kids

Dodo4Kids delivers a simple message for families travelling to the world’s tourism icons, that by giving hope and understanding in our children, we can start to build a growing belief in the vital importance of Climate Friendly Travel (Climate Resilient, Sustainable: Nature +ve) for our collective future. So that as today’s first learners become the decisionmakers in the years leading to 2050 they will make informed and wise choices.

Dodo4Kids inspires children through the adventures of a quirky, reincarnated Dodo, who travels around the world, to teach local kids of the threats from the intensifying Climate Crisis and the importance of a collective response. Through fun books, cartoons, and creative exploration, Dodo transforms lessons from the past into hope-driven action for tomorrow. We are inviting the global Travel & Tourism sector to partner with us.

Professor Geoffrey Lipman President of SUNx Malta (pictured below) said “All the data shows that we are failing on the targets in the Paris Agreement; the SDG; the Biodiversity Convention - so why not put our faith in the next generations to do a better job. Our kids and grandkids will be the decisionmakers when the Paris Agreement’s target dates are here. Through Dodo 4 Kids we want them to start their journey toward Climate Friendly Travel and a thriving planet now - so that the Dodo becomes a beacon of hope, not just a sad reflection on the past.”

Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) said: "At PATA we firmly believe that responsible travel & the future of our industry are rooted in the values we instil in the next generation. The Dodo4Kids initiative beautifully brings to life our mission of fostering sustainable, inclusive and thoughtful tourism across the Asia Pacific region by engaging children & families in the adventure of climate friendly travel. By inspiring young travellers to explore with curiosity, care and respect for people and planet, we are building a legacy of tourism that leaves a positive footprint not just today but for children and communities around the world tomorrow.”

Taking Plastics out of Climate Friendly Travel - World Environment Day 2023

The theme for World Environment Day in 2023 is “Beat Plastic Pollution", against the background of some 400 million tonnes of plastic produced every year, half of which is designed to be used only once.

At SUNx Malta, in solidarity, and in partnership with the World Tourism Network and ICTP, we are adopting a sub-theme to our 2030 Strategy that tracks IPCC Targets and building a responsive Plastics initiative to support our Community Members.

Our Strategy now incorporates a call for peaking of plastic use in 2025, cutting by half in 2030 and Zero Plastics 2050.

To support this, we have created a CFT Plastics Reduction Initiative with our Members and Partners who specialise in this work - Common SeasSearious BusinessTravel without Plastic and the Blue Community who are global players in the Circular Economy, Plastic Elimination and Waste Management.

We will introduce the initiative through selected Chapters, supported by Climate Friendly Travel Services later this year. It is part of our broader “Peak Emissions by 2025 Program”

SUNx is reaching out to the leadership of the Travel & Tourism sector to act on the latest IPCC Report (6th Assessment 2022), which called for 3 clear actions to have any chance of stabilising global temperatures at Paris 1.5 by mid-century:

   -  2025 Peak GHG Emissions

   -  2030 Cut by 43%

   -  2050 Net Zero

It is a fact that many of the leading Travel & Tourism organizations & companies have strongly committed to the 2030 / 2050 goals – epitomised by the Glasgow Declaration.

But what happened to 2025?

Who in the tourism sector has even recognized the IPCC science-based call, that says any mid and long-term goals are dependent on facing up to the harsh realities now and setting a 2025 peaking ambition? Who wants to even try to bend our trend?

How many floods, wildfires, ice melts and deaths will it take for tourism to act now – not in 7 years’ time?

For sure it is a huge challenge for every tourism stakeholder, and yes aviation is a hard-to-abate sector. But during COVID we faced up to that challenge because there was no alternative. Now we have a chance to prepare - and time to get our act together.

Hometel from Home

room2 Chiswick : Net Zero Hometel

Mark Bibby Jackson chats with Melisa Gooding, sustainability specialist at Climate Friendly Travel Registry (CFTR) member Lamington Group which owns the net zero room2 Chiswick Hometel in London.

Robert and Stuart Godwin are clearly ground breakers. Not content with introducing a new  UK hotel concept, the former members of the British Olympic Development Sailing team have raised the bar in terms of climate zero accommodation.

Hometel from Home

Their Lamington Group introduced the hometel brand to the UK in 2o15. Now they have three properties, one in Southampton and two in London. But what is a hometel?

“A Hometel perfectly balances the service and standards of a hotel with the psychological needs people have from space to make them feel comfortable and balanced when they are away from home,” explains Melisa Gooding, sustainability specialist at the Lamington Group.

With innovative features such as 24-hour stays as standard & mattress selection, room2’s highly flexible offer provides kitchens in most rooms and is available for stays from one night to one year.

Net Zero Hometel

Not content with breaking the hotel mode, they are going about transforming the sector. With their room2 Chiswick, which opened in December 2021, the group has launched what they claim is the “world’s first fully whole life net zero hotel”.

Where possible room2 Chiswick’s carbon emissions will be reduced with residual emissions offset throughout the entire Hometel’s life cycle.

“The Hometel goes further than being carbon neutral and is whole life net zero, following the UKGBC’s net zero carbon building framework,” explains Melisa. “Whole life net zero is broken down into two parts. Embodied carbon, which is all the emissions associated with bringing the project to life … and also any refurbishments throughout the building’s lifecycle, and operational carbon which, as the name suggests, refers to all the carbon emissions associated with all the energy sources used to keep the buildings warm, cool, ventilated, lighted and powered.”

Reduce and Offset

The first step was to measure the upfront embodied carbon, which totalled 2,448 tonnes of co2e emissions. This has been offset through a bamboo afforestation project in Nicaragua, through Climate Partner.

The project called Eco Planet, grows giant clumping bamboo to absorb carbon from the atmosphere to be a permanent carbon sink. Robert Godwin visited the offsetting partner to get a deeper understanding of how the project actually absorbs carbon. “We chose this project as it is a nature based carbon removal and aligns with best practice for net zero buildings from the UKGBC framework,” explains Melissa.

Any future embodied carbon from refurbishments or upgrades will also be measured, reduced and offset. Operational carbon will be measured and offset annually and areas to reduce will be identified and acted on.

“It’s really important to say we are on a journey and learning along the way, what we take from room2 Chiswick will be taken forward into future room2 sites,” she adds. “For example, we didn’t hit our target for embodied carbon at Chiswick the building was calculated at 765kg/co2e per m2 and our target was 500kg/co2e per m2 so our focus in new developments is to bring down upfront embodied carbon to this target.”

Life Net Zero Standard

The Lamington Group has committed to the whole life net zero standard for all new properties; those subsequent to their net zero roadmap in September 2021. “Putting sustainability at the core and making Hometels whole life net zero carbon is hugely important,” Melissa says. “We believe we should have full accountability for carbon emissions. The embodied carbon is so often forgotten and we want to change that.”

The inspiration for their journey to whole life net zero came from a perceived lack of innovation within the industry. “Beyond the obvious changes such as limiting towel changes and removing the small plastic toiletry bottles, no one was tackling the single biggest driving force of climate change - carbon emissions.

“With room2 Chiswick, we have set out to be the change we want to see in the industry and we aim to encourage behaviour change to help meet national net zero targets. Our goal is to boost public awareness in how we can all cut energy use.”

Net Zero Measures

Melissa admits to being “extremely creative”. Using solar energy & ground source heat pumps to make buildings 89% more energy efficient than a typical hotel: only heating hot water to 45 degrees Celsius, ultra-energy efficient lighting & occupancy sensors.

The initiatives go further than energy reduction. “There is a blue roof, which can hold up to 50,000 litres of rainwater to reduce localised flooding and a green roof to increase biodiversity and absorb CO2,” says Melissa. They also have around 75,000 bees on the roof, using honey in the bar and café and for guests to purchase.

Room2 Chiswick also works closely with the local community; 100% of the bespoke loose furniture items are made within 10 miles of the hotel. “We prioritised products that aligned with our mission such as those that use renewable energy in their factories and embrace a circular economy,” she says. “We sourced rugs from recycled fishing nets, terracotta tiles reclaimed from decaying buildings, and protected 4,462 trees from the furniture purchases.”

Joining the CFTR & Our recent Podcasts

The Lamington Group recently joined the Climate Friendly Travel Registry (CFTR). “We joined the CFTR as it aligns with our ambitions to reduce carbon emissions specifically from the hospitality sector,” says Melissa. “It also gives us a connection to the UN and access to resources that will be useful to combine with our current efforts.” Melissa hopes this will allow the group to connect with other like minded organisations. “We will collaborate with others to share & learn best practice to ultimately decarbonise, within a holistic approach to our sustainability efforts,” she says. “We can offer practical advice on setting out on this journey, especially in net zero strategy and getting teams engaged in sustainability. I run an award winning engagement campaign called Team Planet. The aim of the campaign is to empower individuals to take action and ownership of sustainability targets.”

We recently welcomed Melissa to the Climate Friendly Travel Podcast, with Ged Brown, where they spoke about the philosophy behind Room2, what the quick wins were, what’s next on their journey and about climate change anxiety – something which is increasingly affecting us all.

You can listen to this fascinating episode on Apple Podcasts or Spotify and we encourage you to subscribe to the podcast to hear more insights from leaders in sustainability around the world.

World’s 46 Least Developed Countries to have Strong Climate Friendly Travel Chapters by September

DOHA, QATAR, MARCH 7, 2023: SUNx Malta will set up Strong Climate Chapters in all 46 least developed countries (LDCs), plus select small island states. Chapters will work locally to advance SUNx’ ambitious and actionable Climate Friendly Travel (CFT) agenda, which is focused on a Paris 1.5°C target.

SUNx co-founder and president Geoffrey Lipman announced this today at the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, Qatar, during a private sector forum on sustainable tourism.

Climate Friendly Travel via travel-friendly climate action

Prof Geoffrey Lipman

“We have a clear view of the way forward for travel & tourism to respond to the ‘code red’ climate crisis identified by the UN and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,” Professor Lipman said.

“It is both ambitious and actionable and will help those countries grow tourism, while containing related greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), mainly through securing adequate supplies of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

“LDCs have done the least to create the climate crisis, are among the most vulnerable, and need tourism to lift them out of poverty.

“It is imperative for LDCS to secure decent standards of living for their citizens.

“‘Clean and green’ Climate Friendly Travel can provide that.”

Local leadership, local impact

SUNx is working towards having Strong Climate Chapters operating in all 46 LDCs and select small island states by September 2023, with each headed by a Strong Climate Champion Leader.

Their main goal will be to advance a CFT culture, encompassing communities, companies, and consumers.

Chapters will also advance the idea of a “Plan B” to grow Climate Friendly Travel while peaking GHG emissions by 2025, as called for by the IPCC, if we are to achieve the Paris 1.5°C target by 2050.

Champions are enrolled in the Diploma in CFT delivered by the Institute of Tourism Studies Malta in partnership with SUNx.

More than 50 full scholarships have been awarded to young people from LDCs since the Diploma was first launched in 2020.

From micro actions to macro advocacy

Strong Climate Chapters will use SUNx’ Plan B template, adapting it to their destinations’ specific circumstances.

SUNx’ Plan B for CFT includes a spectrum of tangible goals from micro actions to macro advocacy and much in between.

Micro actions include relatively easy, inexpensive, and/or cost-saving initiatives, such as changing light bulbs, reducing plastic use, and sourcing local products; sharing good practice from across SUNx’ steadily growing global network.

Macro advocacy will include lobbying for adequate supplies of SAF, investments in next-generation transportation infrastructure, and climate justice.

Strong Climate Friendly Travel Chapters will be further supported by SUNx’ CFT Registry and CFT Portal of tools and resources so that they can offer tangible value to their local travel & tourism stakeholders, showing how to grow and prosper in a sustainable, climate-friendly way.
